Lanai Spouting Cave Pirate Hoard

Lost Treasure HI • Maui County County
Description
Lanai coast legend of pirates or early European raiders hiding plunder in sea caves along the north shore — including the dramatic Spouting Cave blowhole country where oral tales place unrecovered gold.
Historical Notes
Rev. Herbert H. Gowen's Hawaiian Idylls and later island folklore linked Lanai's rugged north coast caves to hidden wealth left by foreigners. The Spouting Cave (Puu Pehe vicinity) is a well-known blowhole where treasure writers imagine sealed caverns behind the surf. Lanai was historically a royal fishing retreat with few permanent settlements, making it a plausible setting for smuggler and pirate cache stories.
