Description
Nineteenth-century smuggling legend of opium runner Alfred Devereaux burying $100,000 in gold or silver coins on uninhabited Kaho'olawe before dying under mysterious circumstances.
Historical Notes
Devereaux supplied China-trade merchants with smuggled opium during the mid-1800s and reportedly cached his profits on Kaho'olawe, the smallest of the main Hawaiian Islands. He died suddenly — some versions blame rival smugglers — and the coin hoard was never officially recovered. Kaho'olawe's long military use and cultural restoration efforts have kept the island largely off-limits, adding to the legend's persistence.
