Big Island legend of a pirate or privateer hoard buried inland north of Kealakekua Bay — treasure writers disagree whether it lies in a coastal hill, lava tube, or cave above Captain Cook's historic landing.
Historical Notes
Kealakekua Bay was a major Hawaiian royal anchorage long before European contact; nineteenth-century treasure lore placed an unclaimed hoard somewhere above the bay's north shore. The site sits near the Captain Cook Monument country and the 1779 events that made the bay famous in Pacific exploration history. Only In Your State and regional compilations treat the cache as one of Hawaii Island's best-known buried-treasure mysteries.
