Battle of Kepaniwai Relics — Iao Valley

Lost Treasure HI • Maui County County
Description
1790 Maui war legend of Kamehameha's slaughter at the Battle of Kepaniwai along Iao Stream — folklore holds that weapons, ornaments, and battle relics remain hidden in the valley west of Wailuku.
Historical Notes
In 1790 Kamehameha's invading forces overwhelmed Maui defenders at Kepaniwai ("damming of the waters"), where the Iao River ran red with casualties. Treasure tradition claims valuable relics and chiefly goods were secreted in the gorge rather than recovered after the battle. Iao Valley State Monument preserves the dramatic cliffs where the legend is set.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
