1838 Jefferson County legend of the steamer Sir Robert Peel sinking at Collins Landing on the St. Lawrence River with a British payroll of $150,000 plus $100,000 in gold and jewelry aboard.
Historical Notes
The Sir Robert Peel was attacked and burned on the St. Lawrence in 1838 during the Patriot War period. Compiled guides credit the wreck at Collins Landing with roughly one hundred fifty thousand dollars in payroll and an additional hundred thousand in gold and jewelry. River divers and metal-detector clubs still cite the Patriot War sinking among Jefferson County's best-known recoverable hoards.
