Seneca County legend that the Loomis Gang buried $40,000 in silver and gold coin in Montezuma Swamp near Seneca Falls after their nineteenth-century stagecoach and canal-era raids.
Historical Notes
The Loomis Gang operated from the Finger Lakes through the 1860s, robbing travelers and canal boats across central New York. Compiled lore places roughly forty thousand dollars in coin in Montezuma Swamp close to Seneca Falls. The swamp and muckland west of Cayuga Lake remain a focal point for Finger Lakes treasure-hunting clubs.
