Lord Amherst Treasure Island Gold

Lost Treasure NY • St. Lawrence County County
Description
St. Lawrence County legend that Lord Amherst buried $100,000 in gold coins on Treasure Island in the Thousand Islands during the Revolutionary War — a named island in river folklore.
Historical Notes
British General Jeffery Amherst commanded North American forces during the Seven Years' and Revolutionary-era campaigns. Thousand Islands folklore credits Amherst with concealing roughly one hundred thousand dollars in gold on Treasure Island in the St. Lawrence River. The legend anchors St. Lawrence County to the same river-patrol and payroll traditions as Ogdensburg and Chimney Island.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
