Revolutionary War Payroll Chaumont Bay

Lost Treasure NY • Jefferson County County
Description
Jefferson County legend of a Revolutionary War payroll chest forced ashore in Chaumont Bay, buried beside a large oak for safekeeping — never recovered according to compiled St. Lawrence–Lake Ontario guides.
Historical Notes
Chaumont Bay on Lake Ontario's south shore saw heavy military boat traffic during the Revolutionary War. Folklore says a payroll chest could not be carried inland and was buried by a landmark oak tree pending a later retrieval that never came. The tale joins other British and American payroll traditions along Jefferson County's lake and river corridors.
