Description
North Shore Oahu legend of pirates burying gold near Puu o Mahuka — Hawaii's largest heiau on the ridge above Waimea Bay — where ancient altar stones and coastal caves fuel buried-treasure speculation.
Historical Notes
Puu o Mahuka Heiau State Historic Site overlooks Waimea Bay and the Pupukea coast, a landscape long associated with chiefly power and later foreign ship sightings. Treasure lore claims pirates used the remote headland ridges to cache plunder in caves below the heiau, though no cache is documented. DLNR manages the heiau as a sacred site; treasure stories are modern folklore layered onto a major Hawaiian temple complex.
