Esperanza Treasure — Palmyra Atoll

Lost Treasure HI • Honolulu County County
Description
1816 Pacific legend of the Spanish ship Esperanza wrecking on Palmyra Atoll with Peruvian bullion — pirates allegedly salvaged the cargo and buried gold and silver on Home Island before dying at sea.
Historical Notes
Palmyra lore says the Esperanza left Peru in 1816 laden with looted Incan treasure, was damaged in a storm, seized by pirates, and eventually wrecked on the atoll's central reef. Survivor letters attributed to James Hines (or Edwards) fueled newspaper expeditions from 1903 through the 1920s, but no bullion has been authenticated. Palmyra is an incorporated U.S. territory administered as part of Honolulu County, Hawaii, roughly 1,000 miles south of Honolulu.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
