Ben Sherrod Steamboat Gold — Black Hawk

Lost Treasure MS • Carroll / Holmes County County
Description
1837 sinking of the steamboat Ben Sherrod on the Mississippi River with $75,000 in gold aboard — scattered coins found on the east bank near Black Hawk sustain the legend.
Historical Notes
In 1837 the steamboat Ben Sherrod caught fire and sank on the Mississippi River while carrying hundreds of passengers and allegedly $75,000 in gold. In the years since, gold coins have been found on the east bank near the community of Black Hawk, bolstering belief that bullion from the wreck remains in riverbank silt.
