Roxie Gold Hole

Lost Treasure MS • Franklin County County
Description
Franklin County landmark along Gold Hole Road — a massive pit dug after a deathbed map claimed gold was buried on local land; chest allegedly sank in quicksand as Jesse James folklore and share-selling schemes swirled.
Historical Notes
Two miles north of Roxie, Gold Hole Road leads to a enormous excavation visible on satellite maps — physical proof of a decades-long treasure hunt. WLBT reports the hole began with a dying man's map given to a local named Reba. Folklore attributes the original gold to Jesse James visits near Natchez. Each dig allegedly sank the chest deeper into quicksand; crowds lined Hamburg Road and investors bought shares. Locals debate curse, sinkholes, and whether anyone ever profited. The gold — if any — is said to remain at the bottom of the Franklin County hole.
