Description
Wichita Mountains legend of a chained iron door sealing a cave near Treasure Lake south of Mount Pinchot — attributed to Spanish miners or Belle Starr's train-robbery gang and said to guard millions in gold.
Historical Notes
Witnesses since the early 1900s report an iron door with hinges and a heavy lock in the refuge south of Treasure Lake near Indiahoma. Spanish versions describe slave-mined ingots and guarding spirits; outlaw versions claim Belle Starr dragged a train-car iron door into the mountains after a Denver mint shipment robbery. Prospector Silas Lee Isom spent seventy years searching; a Missouri woman named Holt arrived around 1908 with a map and key but left empty-handed.
