Mexican Treasure Blue River Strongbox

Lost Treasure OK • Bryan County County
Description
1819 Blue River legend of Mexican bandits burying an iron strongbox with about $105,000 in gold coins near Durant after a Missouri raid — pursuers killed the gang but the chest was never found.
Historical Notes
After a successful holdup in Missouri, the outlaws camped on the Blue River roughly ten miles north of present-day Durant. Seeing avengers approach, the leader ordered the strongbox buried by the river amid rapids and ledges before the entire band was tracked down and killed. In March 1909 the Mexican Treasure Exploration Company dug a shaft near the riverbank until spring rains caused cave-ins and deaths; the chest remains unfound.
