Black Dog Trail Crossing Gold Pouches

Lost Treasure OK • Kay County County
Description
1850 Arkansas River legend of eight Virginia Gold Rush miners burying pouches of gold at Black Dog Trail Crossing northeast of Newkirk — seven died in an Osage attack and the lone survivor died at home before kin could recover the cache.
Historical Notes
Chief Black Dog's trail ran from Baxter Springs, Kansas, to the Great Salt Plains; his warriors fiercely guarded the Arkansas River corridor. The miners wedged a broken rifle in a tree fork to mark the burial spot before the Osage war party struck; only one wounded man escaped to Virginia. Years later the family searched near Newkirk but found no rifle marker or battle trace; the gold pouches remain a Kay County staple in Oklahoma treasure guides.
