Fort Ridgely Missing Treasury

Lost Treasure MN • Nicollet County County
Description
1862 U.S.–Dakota War legend of a federal gold-and-cash shipment disappearing near Fort Ridgely — possibly hidden to keep it from attackers during the siege.
Historical Notes
Fort Ridgely guarded the Minnesota River frontier when the Dakota Conflict erupted in August 1862. Folklore describes soldiers or officials concealing a government payroll or supply treasury near the post during the fighting. The fort is now a state historic site; the missing shipment remains a Nicollet County staple in Minnesota war-era treasure lore.
