Old Sherburne's Hermit Gold

Lost Treasure MN • Sherburne County County
Description
Blue Hill Township legend of hermit "Old Sherburne" burying more than $40,000 in gold coin near Blue Mound before his 1882 death — his Indiana brother searched a full month and never found it.
Historical Notes
Sherburne County organized in 1857; the reclusive hermit lived in a dugout near Blue Hill Township and loaned gold generously to neighbors. After selling an eastern business interest he vanished with the coins; he was buried in Blue Hill (Galbraith) Cemetery. The Sherburne County Historical Society preserves the tale in "There's Gold in Them Thar Hills" as one of two gold mysteries in the same mound country.
