Fort Snelling Buried Gold Canisters

Lost Treasure MN • Hennepin County County
Description
Fort Snelling legend of gold and silver coins hidden in artillery canisters near the Minnesota River bluff — one tube with roughly $2,500–$5,000 was found by boys in the 1980s while lore claims four more may remain.
Historical Notes
Treasure magazines in the 1980s publicized coin caches buried at the historic fort above the Minnesota–Mississippi confluence. Metal detectorist Roger Mn. described nearly recovering a copper canister in 1987 before two boys pulled it from gravel south of the stone fort — news reports cited $2,500–$5,000 in coins. Hunters speculate additional 1½-inch shot canisters may still lie along the bluff drop-off above the state park river flats.
