Birch Coulee Battle Buried Valuables

Lost Treasure MN • Renville County County
Description
September 1862 Birch Coulee legend of settlers and soldiers burying coins and jewelry during the deadly battle near Morton before the Dakota attack overran the camp.
Historical Notes
Colonel Samuel McPhail's relief column fought one of the war's bloodiest engagements at Birch Coulee southwest of Morton. Treasure lore says fleeing settlers and soldiers hastily buried personal gold and silver in the wooded coulee as fighting closed in. Changing fields and timber have frustrated searches; the site is preserved as Birch Coulee Battlefield.
