Spanish Gold at Plattsmouth — Cass County

Lost Treasure NE • Cass County County
Description
Plattsmouth legend of a large cache of Spanish gold coins and nuggets buried at an old Oregon Trail campsite west of town on the Missouri River approach to the Platte Valley.
Historical Notes
Emigrants ferried the Missouri River at Council Bluff and Plattsmouth landings before joining the Great Platte River Road toward the Rocky Mountains. Campsite folklore often places strongboxes buried when cholera, Indian alarms, or sudden departures prevented recovery. Compiled Nebraska guides credit an old trail campsite just west of Plattsmouth with a large hoard of gold coins and nuggets — sometimes described as Spanish in origin. The story appears in Jameson's Nebraska chapter and The Rocker Box Cass County list. Urban and agricultural growth along the Missouri bottomlands have covered the trail corridor. Coordinates approximate the west Plattsmouth overland campsite in Cass County.
