Scottsbluff grew as a railroad and sugar-beet center beneath Scotts Bluff National Monument. Compiled guides place one hundred thousand dollars in gold and currency in the cellar of the Bolton Hotel before it burned. The hoard has never been reported recovered from the hotel site in Scotts Bluff County.
