Description
Harney County legend of Fort Harney soldiers finding gold nuggets while campaigning in the Owyhee Desert in the 1870s — a dying sheepherder later duplicated the find but died without giving coordinates.
Historical Notes
The Owyhee Desert spans southeast Oregon, northern Nevada, and southwestern Idaho with remote basalt canyons and sagebrush. Soldiers on Indian-campaign duty reportedly found nuggets but could not explore; decades later a sheepherder described the same country before dying with gold among his belongings. Legends of America lists the tale among Harney County's lost-mine entries distinct from the Blue Bucket and John Day traditions.
