Cursed Treasure of Columbia City

Lost Treasure OR • Columbia County County
Description
Columbia River legend of mutinous Spanish sailors burying stolen cargo near Columbia City in 1841 — repeated digs found skeletons and madness, and folklore says an immutable curse guards the hoard.
Historical Notes
Charles M. Skinner recorded that a Spanish bark watered off Columbia City in 1841; the crew killed the captain, seized valuables, and buried most on Hez Copier's farm tract after shore fights. Returning mutineers two years later could not relocate the burial; Spiritualist-led digs in the 1880s and 1890s uncovered broken stone and skeletons with accidents that abandoned the search. The tale blends Oregon maritime mutiny lore with Columbia River Indian-period camp geography.
