Description
Pike National Forest landmark north of Woodland Park where late-1800s outlaw gangs used caves and gulches to hide stolen goods — multiple buried-treasure tales persist around the 1912 fire lookout tower summit.
Historical Notes
Devil's Head Mountain towers over the Front Range thirty miles north of Woodland Park, visible for 75 miles. Wild gulches, caves, and thick timber made it a favorite hideout for outlaw gangs in the late 1800s. Legends of America documents numerous buried-treasure stories in the vicinity. The summit hosts the last operating fire lookout tower on Colorado's Front Range, built in 1912 with materials packed by mules. Access via Rampart Range Road off Highway 67 west from Sedalia. Coordinates mark the mountain summit area.
