Reynolds Gang Loot — South Park

Lost Treasure CO • Park County County
Description
1864 Confederate raider Jim Reynolds and his gang robbed South Park stage stations of thousands in gold and greenbacks, buried the loot near Geneva Gulch above Deer Creek, and fled — most of the cache was never recovered.
Historical Notes
In July 1864, Jim Reynolds led eight Confederate raiders in Colorado Territory's only Civil War invasion, robbing ranches and stage stops from Fairplay to Conifer of an estimated $5,000–$100,000. A posse killed Owen Singleterry (whose head was preserved in alcohol at Fairplay) and captured five bandits; Reynolds and two others escaped to New Mexico. Dying outlaw John Reynolds told Albert Brown the loot was in an old prospect hole above Deer Creek near timberline — $40,000 in greenbacks and three cans of gold dust, marked by a broken butcher-knife handle in a tree. Brown, forest fires, and detective David J. Cook searched without success. Cook published Reynolds' directions in 1897. The hoard is still sought in South Park between Fairplay and Como.
