Description
Legend of four French-Canadian trappers driven off the Snake River who panned Gunnison headwaters, were attacked by Utes, and buried their gold on Round Mountain before the lone survivor was killed at Poncha Pass.
Historical Notes
Four French Canadians trapping on the Snake River near Round Mountain were robbed by American trappers and driven south into western Colorado. One found a gold nugget in Gunnison River headwaters and the party spent a month panning successfully. Utes discovered them; three were killed in a running battle. The fourth buried gold on Round Mountain near Saguache, fled over Cochetopa Pass, and was killed near Poncha Pass summit before he could return. The treasure has been sought for generations in the upper Gunnison / Cochetopa country.
