Virginia Dale Stage Robbery Gold

Lost Treasure CO • Larimer County County
Description
1863 Overland Trail robbery one mile from Virginia Dale Station: six masked men took a $60,000 army payroll in gold coins near Long View Hill and buried it in the foothills before the cavalry killed them — coins never found.
Historical Notes
A stagecoach carrying months of back pay in ten- and twenty-dollar gold coins for Fort Sanders, Wyoming, was robbed near Virginia Dale Station on the Overland Trail in 1863. Six outlaws blew open the strongbox in wooded foothills west of Long View Hill and buried the coins. Before spending the loot, U.S. Cavalry pursued and killed the gang. The empty iron strongbox was found bullet-riddled in a creek. Outlaws used Robbers Roost cabin atop Table Mountain northeast of the station. Joseph "Jack" Slade, former station master, was rumored as ringleader. Virginia Dale ghost town and the NRHP stage station lie on County Road 43F near US 287 — private property; do not trespass.
