Sturdivant Gang Counterfeiter Hoard Rosiclare

Lost Treasure IL • Hardin County County
Description
Rosiclare legend of counterfeiter Roswell Sturdivant burying a hoard near Sturdivant's Fort above the Ohio River — WVIK folklore pairs it with the Hardin County cave-country outlaw belt.
Historical Notes
The Sturdivant Gang operated Sturdivant's Fort near present-day Rosiclare, passing counterfeit money until raids in 1822–1823. Roald Tweet recounts early-nineteenth-century counterfeiter Sturdivant burying treasure near Rosiclare in the same region as miser James Griffith's cave savings. Hardin County histories document the fort, the gang's arrests, and generations of treasure speculation along the fluorspar district.
