Cave-in-Rock River Pirate Treasure

Lost Treasure IL • Hardin County County
Description
Hardin County legend of $200,000 in Cave-in-Rock treasure near the Ohio River pirate den — where flatboat bandits and the Harpe brothers preyed on river commerce after 1790.
Historical Notes
The 55-foot-wide cave in Cave-In-Rock State Park sheltered river pirates who ambushed Ohio River flatboats. Vigilantes called the Exterminators broke the pirate stronghold in 1799; compiled guides value lost loot at $200,000. Local lore also ties Jesse James and serial-killer Harpe brothers to the cave, though documented history centers on the 1790s pirate era.
