James Griffith Miser Cave Savings Rosiclare

Lost Treasure IL • Hardin County County
Description
Rosiclare area legend that miser and robber James Griffith buried his life savings in a cave near the Ohio River fluorspar country — never reported recovered.
Historical Notes
Mississippi Valley folklore describes Griffith as both a miser and a robber who hid wealth in a Hardin County cave. The story sits beside Sturdivant counterfeiter lore and Cave-in-Rock pirate traditions in southeastern Illinois guides. Rosiclare's lead-and-fluorspar boom later overshadowed the early outlaw era but not the buried-savings legend.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
