Description
Knox County legend of $35,000 to $50,000 in gold and silver still locked in the safe of the steamer Royal Tar, which burned and sank off Vinalhaven in 1836 while carrying a circus.
Historical Notes
The Royal Tar was a side-wheel steamer that caught fire near Vinalhaven in October 1836 with circus animals and equipment aboard. Compiled New England guides credit the wreck with thirty-five to fifty thousand dollars in gold and silver still in the ship's safe. The disaster is among Knox County's best-documented recoverable hoards alongside Monroe Island pirate lore.
