Black Bellamy Machias River Wooden Vault

Lost Treasure ME • Washington County County
Description
Washington County legend that pirate Samuel "Black Bellamy" buried fifteen to thirty-five million dollars in treasure in a large wooden vault on the Machias River shore — where his crew once maintained a hidden fort.
Historical Notes
Samuel Bellamy captured dozens of ships before the Whydah wrecked off Cape Cod in 1717; his crew used the Machias River mouth as a Downeast hideout. Compiled Maine guides describe a wooden vault reminiscent of Oak Island lore, holding millions in modern-equivalent gold. The 1984 discovery of the Whydah wreck revived shoreline searches along Machias Bay and the river preserve.
