Description
Flagship Austin city park on Barton Creek, anchored by Barton Springs Pool. Land acquired from Andrew Zilker in 1917 and 1931; developed as a metropolitan recreation ground through the WPA era.
Historical Notes
Andrew Jackson Zilker deeded land to the Austin school district in 1917 and expanded the gift in 1931, creating the park that bears his name. Barton Springs has drawn swimmers for centuries; the bathhouse and pool improvements date to the 1920s–1940s. Zilker hosts the Zilker Zephyr, picnic groves, the Austin Nature & Science Center (1950s), and the Zilker Botanical Garden. Listed on the National Register as part of Austin's historic park landscape.
