Zavalla Neches River Ford Payroll — Angelina County

Lost Treasure TX • Angelina County County
Description
Zavalla legend of a payroll or trade strongbox buried at a historic Neches River ford in southeastern Angelina County near the Angelina National Forest.
Historical Notes
Zavalla sits in the southeastern corner of Angelina County where the Neches River bends toward Jasper County. The Coushatta Trace and Alabama Trace crossed the Neches in this corridor before Fort Teran and later rail towns rose upstream. River-ford cache stories appear throughout the Neches basin from Rockland to the Gulf. Zavalla's position between Lufkin and Jasper made it a waypoint for timber and cattle traffic. Coordinates mark Zavalla on the Neches River approach in Angelina County.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
