Description
1888 Priest Lake legend of prospector Zak Stoneman burying three burro loads of gold north of the Priest River below Priest Lake after his mules died from poisoned weeds — he could never relocate the cache on return.
Historical Notes
After successful prospecting near Priest Lake, Stoneman lost his pack animals to toxic vegetation and interred three loads of gold before continuing on foot. When he came back to recover the burial, shifting landmarks prevented him from finding the exact spot. Legends of America places the hoard somewhere in the timbered country 3–4 miles below Priest Lake along the Priest River drainage.
