Description
Savannah River legend of pirate and smuggler gold buried along Yamacraw Bluff — the 1733 landing site of James Oglethorpe's Georgia colony and a centuries-old smuggling waterfront.
Historical Notes
Yamacraw Bluff on the Savannah River is where Oglethorpe negotiated with Tomochichi for the Georgia colony's founding. The bluff later became a dense port of warehouses, taverns, and factors' offices. DAR and local historians document the bluff as a hub where river pirates, privateers, and blockade runners concealed valuables in cellars and caves cut into the riverbank. Factors Walk and River Street tunnels perpetuate stories of chests never recovered from Savannah's golden age of smuggling.
