Woodville Confederate Tax Strongbox — Jasper County

Lost Treasure TX • Jasper County County
Description
Woodville legend of a Confederate-era tax or county specie strongbox buried when Jasper County seat commerce shifted along the Neches during the Civil War.
Historical Notes
Woodville has been the Jasper County seat since 1849, serving the Neches River plantation and timber country south of Lufkin. East Texas courthouse towns generated folklore of tax rolls and specie buried before Union incursions or Reconstruction seizures. The Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation and Big Thicket country lie north of Woodville, isolating caches that were never recovered according to local tradition. Coordinates mark downtown Woodville in Jasper County.
