Description
Pleasant Valley ghost-town legend of gold and silver double-eagles cached by Winter Quarters miners who were paid in coin with no local bank — knowledge lost when 199 men died in the May 1, 1900 mine explosion.
Historical Notes
Winter Quarters was Utah's first coal camp in northwestern Carbon County; miners reportedly hid payroll coins under rocks and fence posts around valley-side homes. The 1900 blast — one of the nation's deadliest coal disasters — killed miners who may never have told families where coins were buried. Chuck Zehnder links the tale to the same gold-rich era as the 1897 Castle Gate robbery three years earlier.
