William McCaffrey Lake Mille Lacs Fortune

Lost Treasure MN • Mille Lacs County County
Description
Nineteenth-century Lake Mille Lacs legend of businessman William S. McCaffrey burying gold coins, jewelry, and artifacts near the lake shore before his mysterious death.
Historical Notes
McCaffrey prospered during Minnesota's early development and allegedly hid his wealth to protect it from thieves. He died without revealing the spot; dense lakeshore woods have frustrated decades of searches around Mille Lacs. Central Minnesota media and treasure compilations keep the McCaffrey mystery among the state's best-known unfound fortunes.
