Waugh's Rancho Cibolo Creek Payroll — La Salle County

Lost Treasure TX • La Salle County County
Description
Waugh's Rancho legend of a lost cattle-shipping payroll at the stage stop on Cibolo Creek where the San Antonio–Laredo road crossed William A. Waugh's ranch in La Salle County.
Historical Notes
In 1856 William A. Waugh established a ranch where the San Antonio–Laredo road crossed Cibolo Creek. He returned permanently in 1861 and maintained a large cattle herd; his headquarters became a stopping point for travelers, and a store was established with a post office granted in 1879 under the name Waugh's Rancho. More than twenty-five ranches were established in La Salle County during the 1870s. Stage-stop and ranch-store payroll caches are standard entries in South Texas treasure compilations along the Camino Real corridor. Coordinates approximate Waugh's Rancho on Cibolo Creek in La Salle County southwest of Cotulla.
