Washington on the Brazos Republic Treasury Legend

Lost Treasure TX • Washington County County
Description
Washington-on-the-Brazos legend of Republic-era specie and emergency reserves buried when the frontier capital was abandoned — site of the 1836 Texas Declaration of Independence.
Historical Notes
Washington-on-the-Brazos served as the Republic of Texas capital where delegates signed the Declaration of Independence on March 2, 1836. Steamboats on the Brazos brought mail, goods, and government funds to the riverport. When the capital moved and the town declined, treasure tradition holds that merchants and officials buried strongboxes rather than move everything by wagon over muddy roads. The historic site is now Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site. Archaeology has recovered everyday artifacts but no bullion hoards. Coordinates mark the state historic site southeast of Bryan–College Station.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
