Victoria County legend of a treasure of gold coins buried south of Victoria — the Crossroads city where the Guadalupe River meets the coastal prairie.
Historical Notes
Victoria was founded by Martín De León in 1824 and grew as a cattle, cotton, and trail hub between San Antonio, Goliad, and the Gulf ports. The Rocker Box Victoria County list cites guidebook lore of gold coins buried south of town. South Texas treasure tradition ties the Guadalupe River valley to Spanish pack trains, Mexican pay chests, and Runaway Scrape hoards from 1836. No authenticated recovery is documented. Coordinates approximate the prairie south of downtown Victoria. Much of the area is ranch land.
