Van Horn Allamoore Mining District — Culberson County

Gold Mining Site TX • Culberson County County
Description
The Van Horn–Allamoore mining district in Culberson County produced copper ores with trace gold — TSHA lists gold occurrences in the Van Horn and Allamore Mountains along the El Paso–Pecos corridor.
Historical Notes
Most Texas copper mining attempts targeted the Van Horn–Allamoore district in Culberson County. TSHA reports gold traces in the Van Horn, Allamore, and Quitman Mountains with other West Texas ores. Copper refineries and smelters historically operated in El Paso County, tying the border city to Trans-Pecos ore shipments even when mines were remote from town. No commercial placer gold camp developed here; prospecting interest centers on lode copper and silver-lead contexts with minor gold byproduct. Coordinates mark Van Horn in Culberson County as the district gateway east of El Paso.
