Uvalde Southern Pacific Railroad Payroll — Uvalde County

Lost Treasure TX • Uvalde County County
Description
Uvalde legend of a Southern Pacific Railroad payroll strongbox from the era when Uvalde became the Hill Country gateway on the San Antonio–El Paso corridor.
Historical Notes
Uvalde was founded in 1855 and named county seat in 1856. The Southern Pacific line made Uvalde a freight and passenger stop between San Antonio and the Trans-Pecos, concentrating weekly ranch and railroad payrolls in cash. Rail-payroll treasure folklore mirrors Del Rio, Laredo, and San Angelo border traditions. Downtown Uvalde preserves its opera house and nineteenth-century commercial district along Getty Street. Coordinates mark downtown Uvalde at the historic Southern Pacific corridor.
