Tucumcari Route 66 Outlaw Loot — Quay County

Lost Treasure NM • Quay County County
Description
Tucumcari legend of outlaw loot buried near the Route 66 town — the Quay County seat where railroad, cattle, and motor-tourist commerce converged on the Caprock corridor.
Historical Notes
Tucumcari developed as a railroad and cattle town before becoming one of the best-known Route 66 service centers in New Mexico. Rough motor-court and saloon commerce on the Mother Road fed decades of holdup and strongbox folklore. Quay County organized in 1903 with Tucumcari as county seat. The town name derives from Comanche Chief Kewan, linking the site to Plains raiding and trade traditions that often appear in regional cache tales. Coordinates mark downtown Tucumcari in Quay County northwest of Clovis on Interstate 40.
