Description
Church community at Tow — the oldest settlement in Llano County, founded 1852–1853 on the Colorado River near the Bluffton-Tow Salt Works.
Historical Notes
Tow is the oldest community in Llano County. David and Gideon Cowan arrived in 1852 and developed the Bluffton-Tow Salt Works, which supplied the Confederacy before the 1871 "salt works cyclone" destroyed the operation. William and Wilson Tow named Tow Valley when their families arrived in 1853. A post office opened in 1886. Churches and schools served salt-workers, ranchers, and stage travelers on the Burnet-Llano corridor.
