Topsail Island Pirate Topsails Hideout

Lost Treasure NC • Pender / Onslow County County
Description
Central Carolina coast legend that pirates hid behind Topsail Island with topsails peeking above dunes — ambushing merchant gold from sound-side channels used by Blackbeard, Bonnet, and Vane.
Historical Notes
Sea Vista Motel history recounts Golden Age pirates lurking in channels between Topsail and the mainland, visible only by their topsails. Merchants learned to scan dunes before entering Wilmington trade routes. Stede Bonnet and Charles Vane joined Blackbeard in preying on Carolina traffic. Lea Island radar "ghost ship" folklore echoes the same ambush tactics. The central barrier islands remain a hub for wreck diving and beachcombing legends.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
