Tongue River Miles City Railroad Specie — Custer County

Lost Treasure MT • Custer County County
Description
Tongue River legend of unrecovered railroad and cattle-town specie — where the Northern Pacific terminus and Fort Keogh made Miles City the wool and livestock capital of the northern plains.
Historical Notes
Miles City grew at the Tongue River confluence after the Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1881, absorbing the Fort Keogh supply economy and Yellowstone Valley freight wealth. Fallon County Times stage histories note that road agents multiplied when Billings–Fort Benton and Billings–Buffalo routes crossed eastern Montana cattle trails; Miles City stockmen including Senator T.C. Power moved express bullion by stage before rail. Coordinates approximate the Tongue River bottom west of downtown Miles City. River corridor — legend only.
Status / Verification legend — Legendary or approximate
