Threadgill Creek — Llano River Placer Gold — Mason County

Gold Mining Site TX • Mason County County
Description
Placer gold in Llano River gravels near the Threadgill Creek confluence east of Mason. Fine gold concentrates in the same granite-country river reach associated with lost-mine legends.
Historical Notes
Threadgill Creek joins the Llano River in Mason County east of the county seat, where the river cuts through granite and limestone of the Llano Uplift. The Rocker Box Mason County compilation describes a lost silver mine near this confluence; the same river gravels carry fine placer gold from upstream erosion. Prospecting tips: Focus on the Llano River bars and bedrock cracks at and just below the Threadgill mouth after high water. Black-sand streaks may concentrate fine gold alongside garnet and magnetite from Precambrian source rocks. Access: Nearly all creek and riverbank land is private Hill Country ranch property. Do not trespass; obtain landowner permission before panning.
