Description
State residential school for deaf students; founded 1857, among the oldest continuously operating schools for the deaf in the United States.
Historical Notes
Established by the Texas Legislature in 1856; opened on South Congress Avenue before moving to the present 67-acre campus south of the river. Historic campus buildings reflect nineteenth- and twentieth-century institutional architecture; cornerstone of deaf education in Texas.
